Welcome to my third and fourth grade class! I'm Amanda McEntire Spivey. I teach English Language Arts (ELA) to my third grade and all fourth grade students. I am certified K-6, with a BA degree in Psychology, both from UNC-Asheville. I also have National Board Certification in Early Childhood Generalist. I am married to Edwin Spivey and we have two children. Katelyn is in 12th grade and Matthew is in 9th grade, both at McDowell High School. I have taught for 24 years primarily in second and third grade. I enjoy time with my family, my church, and friends. I love the outdoors and settling in with a good book or movie. My kiddos keep us hopping, as they are very involved in church and sports. In my ELA classroom, I teach Common Core Standards through whole group read aloud and all levels through Guided Reading and a structure known as Daily 5. Students read to self and someone, listen to reading, write, and do word work activities. I believe that students need direct instruction a set amount of time each day, provided through whole group lessons, but also need time through rotations to have choice and take responsibility for their own learning. This structure allows me to meet and work with students at each one's appropriate level. Wilma Brooks is teaching math and Stephanie Goodreau is teaching science and social studies, with emphasis on reading informational text. We, as a team, are here to work with you and your child to help him/her grow both academically and socially/emotionally. I encourage you to join our Class Dojo to keep in contact with us, as well as see the great things your child is doing. We are here if you need us!
